Myth: working out right after a big meal doesn't affect digestion

You've probably heard it both ways: some people swear by a walk after eating, others say give your stomach time before you move at all. This week we're pulling apart where that second version actually comes from — and where it doesn't apply.

The myth

That any movement right after a meal — a walk, a workout, doesn't matter — pulls blood away from your stomach and gets in the way of digestion.

The fact

The mechanism is real, but the intensity matters. When you push into an intense session on a full stomach, your body does redirect blood flow toward working muscles and away from your gut — that's the cramping, heaviness, or nausea some people feel after training too soon after eating.

A gentle walk is a different signal entirely. Light movement doesn't compete for that blood flow the same way, and the research on this is some of the most consistent in exercise science: even a short walk after a meal helps your body manage blood sugar and generally sits easier than staying seated.

The research

This isn't just anecdotal. Research led by Loretta DiPietro at George Washington University found that older adults at risk of impaired glucose tolerance who took three 15-minute walks after meals controlled their blood sugar over 24 hours significantly better than a single longer walk taken at a different time of day — timing mattered as much as the walk itself. A 2025 study found that a 10-minute walk taken immediately after eating blunted the blood sugar spike almost as much as a single 30-minute walk taken later — reinforcing that timing, not just duration, drives the benefit.

The takeaway isn't "never move after eating." It's know the difference between a walk and a workout, and give a heavy session the gap it needs.
